Peter S. Firey (Pete)

Associate / Washington, D.C. Metro Office

Peter supports the patent preparation and prosecution needs of some of the firm’s largest clients. With experience as a former engineer, he is able to understand complex technologies in fields as diverse as telecommunications, electrical circuits, semiconductors, heat exchangers, automotive manufacturing, and consumer products. He has experience in all aspects of the patent lifecycle, from drafting claims and conducting patentability analyses, to assisting with licensing and valuation efforts for granted patents.

Peter enjoys working directly with inventors and invention disclosures to parse the novelties within each new technology and place it in the context of the client’s business strategy. His straight-talk approach to patent counseling further emphasizes patents that solve a business need rather than providing another piece of legal paper. Peter’s clients greatly appreciate this level of honesty, as well as his commitment to building positive relationships through availability and responsiveness.

Before attending law school, Peter worked as a product engineer for an international automotive supplier where he interfaced with multiple internal and international teams to identify business objectives, secure new business, and optimize systems to meet customer demands. He also previously worked as a process engineer focused on improving the manufacturing processes and continual operation of a large aluminum plant.

Outside of the office, Peter is a competitive sailor who likes to get out on the water whenever the weather allows. He also enjoys participating in triathlons across the Mid-Atlantic region.
