Harness IP Litigator Glenn Forbis Named a Go-to Lawyer
Harness IP is pleased to share that firm Principal and Metro Detroit patent litigator Glenn Forbis has been named a “Go-to Lawyer” for intellectual property by Michigan Lawyers Weekly. The honor recognizes Michigan’s leading lawyers in the field of IP law.
Forbis is an accomplished trial lawyer with nearly 30 years of legal experience. He specializes in intellectual property litigation and carries a track record of success on both the plaintiff and the defense side. In an age when few “litigators” engage in actual trials, Forbis excels at telling a story that judges and juries can understand, even when the underlying technology is daunting.
His recent notable matters include victories on behalf of clients Western Plastics and Stahls’ Inc. On behalf of the former, Forbis and his team secured a “complete win” in a jury verdict that found his client’s patent was both valid and willfully infringed by a competitor. The jury awarded lost profits damages, which the court trebled in addition to issuing a permanent injunction against the defendant. The defendant appealed the ruling, but, on December 16. 2021, the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed all aspects of the judgment.
On the defense side, Forbis successfully persuaded the United States Patent and Trademark Office to invalidate four patents asserted against his client Stahls’ Inc. in co-pending litigation. The damage claim in the infringement suit totaled more than $20 million and, adding further pressure, the patents had been previously litigated against a different defendant in a trial in which the jury found the patents valid and infringed. The plaintiff hoped to parlay that judgment into a quick follow-on win against Stahls’. Forbis’ expertise in Inter Partes Review proceedings, however, led to the axing of four asserted patents and a resounding victory for his client.
In addition to his litigation practice, Forbis is a valued mentor who has trained several attorneys on the finer points of IP litigation and client counseling. He also regularly contributes his expertise in the form of by-lined articles and comments for legal publications such as Bloomberg Law and Law360. He holds a J.D., MBA, and B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan.
Only 24 attorneys from Michigan earned this year’s “Go-to Lawyer” designation for IP law. A list of recipients can be found on the Michigan Lawyers Weekly website.
